How lucky are you?   Leave a comment

You know I was driving over to my Mum’s the other day as unfortunately she wasn’t feeling too good, so I thought I would go check on her as she is 85 and still going strong, but obviously at that age you worry about them. Whilst driving over there I thought how lucky I am.

The reasons being:-

  1. As I work mostly from home I can decide when I want to work, so if an emergency comes up I can take time out and without having to worry about the consequences. If I was employed that may not be possible and would only add to the stress of an already difficult situation.
  2. I have generally more flexibility in everything I do.
  3. I can choose who to work for.
  4. I can decide the prices I charge.
  5. I can decide when to take time off and have a holiday, planned or last-minute.

All in all I feel very lucky that I have the flexibility, choice and option to work for myself as not everyone has. Sometimes people have, but just can’t make that leap from being employed to self-employed. I guess in a way I was pushed into being self-employed because of the experience of a previous employer and I decided that I would prefer to work for myself rather than be employed again.

No one ever knows what the future holds and yes there are risks involved, but you take a risk every time you go out driving, crossing the road etc. I think you have to think long and hard about what you want to do, give yourself a time limit to see if it’s working the way you hoped and if not have a plan B but other than that take that step and go for it.

From my personal experience this is the best thing I ever did and I love it; I just hope it continues and that’s the next thing that comes to mind – how long will it last, but that’s for another day and time to think about. At the moment I am enjoying my flexibility, freedom and choice of what I do and when.

Just to let you know my Mum did need my help that day, but she is fighting fit again now and running around; thank goodness. The lucky and privileged thing is; I was able to be there when she needed me.

There are probably a lot more reasons why people set-up in business themselves, it would be great to hear your story and why you enjoy it so much and how lucky you are?  Please get in touch…….

Where are you going?   Leave a comment

When planning our holiday most of us do some research on cost, availability and country or area we wish to visit. Another important aspect is travel, how are we going to get there, how long will it take, as well as the cost involved.
Well should the same rules apply for your business?  Do you ever stop to ask ‘Where are you going’.
Q. Where do you want your business to go? –  I imagine all of us obviously want an upward trend rather than downward, but how can we ensure that we achieve this.
A. You need to know where you are going, i.e. how much you want to achieve and progress.
Some may want to be high earners, expand their business and live the life of luxury.  Whereas others may want to expand a bit but still remain in full control of the decision-making and others might just want to make enough money to comfortably get by.
Whatever category you fit into you need to have an idea of where you want to go and it needs to be realistic. So much depends on other factors in your life, i.e. family – a single person will probably have more time to devote to their business than a person who is married with children. Also where you live can be a factor as well as any other commitments etc. The list could be endless.  You need to know what you want to achieve and what you can achieve realistically.
Q. How much will it cost?
A. You need to be realistic with costings. Make sure you don’t expand too quickly and try to run before you can walk.
Sometimes the urge to start working from home and then wanting to expand to office premises can be a difficult decision and sometimes made too quickly. You have to think about the extra overheads – travelling to and from the office, rent, office equipment, security etc.  Or maybe you need more help and are thinking about taking on extra staff but again this can be expensive and time consuming from interview to employing someone. These are some of the factors you need to consider when thinking about expanding and growing your business.
Q. How long will it take to get to where you want to be?
A. Well this is a difficult question as it depends on the first and second answer. So much depends on other factors – how much time can you devote to your business, how much capital have you got to invest but most important of all is how far you want to go.
Some businesses may take longer than others to get where they are going but with determination, realistic ambition and a little bit of patience hopefully you will achieve what you set out to do.
I know one of the most important things for me in my business is enjoying what I do!

Why so many start-ups fail   7 comments

Man looking through binoculars

New businesses need to keep their eyes on the bigger picture

It is an uncomfortable fact of business life that four out of five start-ups end in failure.
With the economic downturn making things even tougher for new firms, how can you avoid the pitfalls that trap so many fledgling businesses?
First of all, remember that given how many start-ups fail following the most well worn paths is not necessarily the best policy.
It is better to understand why they fail and make sure you don’t make the same mistakes.
Although businesses fail for a multitude of reasons, the underlying issues are surprisingly common.
I’m going to briefly address what, in my experience, are the five deadly sins of the start-up entrepreneur:
FAILURE TO SEE THE BIGGER PICTURE
If you have your head down doing everything from sales and marketing to accounting, who has the overview required to steer the business on the right path?
It is crucial that you work on the business – stepping back from the day to day to drive it forward.
To do that, you must delegate wherever possible the tasks that can be carried out by others – if you encourage, empower and motivate them the results will astound you.
FAILURE TO PLAN
You wouldn’t set out on an unfamiliar journey without a map, so it’s amazing how many businesses try to muddle through without a plan.
A good business plan will set targets against which you can benchmark your business – allowing you to make informed decisions about what to do next.
If you don’t have one, prepare a plan now, review it on a monthly basis against actual figures and constantly update it.
FAILURE TO MEASURE
Too many business owners have little or no idea what the key numbers in their operation are.
These may not necessarily just be financial, and can include other quantitative measures such as sales conversion rates or website traffic statistics.
Successful businesses measure everything that moves and even things that don’t.
IGNORING THE CASH FLOW
Whatever happens, cash will always be king.
When money is tight and business may not be as abundant as it once was, conserving your cash resources is critical.
Keep an eye on expenditure and watch credit control carefully.
STANDING STILL
A wise man once told me that the definition of business insanity is to do the same thing this year as you did last year and expect a different result. He was right.
Successful businesses innovate and change all the time – those that don’t are simply left behind.
Make no mistake, getting these basics wrong, or not doing them at all is a recipe for failure.
They are the solid foundations on which success is built and must be given the attention they deserve.
